COMFREY
OINTMENT
30 g
100 g of ointment contains bipolar extract from 30 g
of fresh comfrey roots,
(Symphytum officinale
L. Boraginaceae).
CHEMICAL
COMPOSITION:
The fresh
comfrey roots contains:
Allantoin
0,6-0,8%, Mucilage, Tannic acids, Mucus, Essential oil, at
least eight pyrrolizidine alkaloids 0,3-0,4% (Symphytine,
Echimidine,
Heliosupine, Intermedine,

Lasiocarpine,
Lycopsamine, Acetyllycopsamine). Bipolar extract of comfrey roots contains more than
99% hydrosolubile, and more than 95% liposolubile constituents
of roots.
HISTORICAL
AND TRADITIONAL USE:
Comfrey has been promoted and used as a medicinal
plant for hundreds of years. In the traditional medicine of
various countries, comfrey has been appreciated as an
excellent bone healing herb, used for broken bones. Comfrey has a long, consistent history of use
as a topical agent for improving wound healing, skin ulcers,
strains & sprains, bruises, cuts and bites.
Comfrey has a reputation as an anti-inflammatory for a
variety of rashes.It has been used for arthritis swelling as
well. In Bosnia and other South Slavic countries, comfrey has
been used traditionally in the form of famous “Comfrey
milk”. This extraordinary powerfull bone healing emulsion,
was used by traditional herbalist called "bone-setters"
famous by theirs «majic art» in fixing the broken bones. Now
we almost surelly know that this majic belongs to the comfrey,
precisely it's constituent allantoin which promotes growth and
renewal of broken bone tissue.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
Comfrey ointment acts through the allantoin
which is excellent cell growth promoter. It stimulates wound
healing, renewal of broken bone tissue, and tendon tissue
damaged by the
strains and
prains. This is possible by the fast difusion of allantoin through the
skin and
surrounding tissues. The comfrey ointment enables fast
removal of bruises by hemolysis of red
blood cells in the damaged tissue. For healing of wounds, and skin
ulcers, very important is the so called
"plaster"
effect of tonifying affected area, by the various mucous constituents and
tannins, while the allantoin prevents the scarf formation promoting the
fast renewal of skin epitelial tissue. Adstringent property of tannin is
helpful for bleeding stop activity.
INDICATION:
Skin surface wounds, skin ulcers, broken bones,
strains and sprains, bruises, cuts and bites, local skin bleeding.
MEDICINAL USE:
Three times a day rub in the ointment on the affected
area.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Alergy to the some of the constituents of the ointment
USEFULL INFORMATIONS AND WARNINGS:
1.
The product must not be taken internally because of possible
hapatotoxicityof pyrrolizidine alkaloids.
2.
The pyrrolizidine alkaloids cannot be absorbed through the skin and
topical use of this preparation do not include any possible danger.
3.
In the case of open and deep wounds, do not apply ointment on the
open and bleeding wounds. In this case ointment should be applied on the
surrounding intact skin area.
4.
To avoid abscess formation, do not apply the ointment in the case
of deep wounds,before the inner healing process has not been finnished
yet.
The product should be kept in cold and dry place far from the reach of children.
