Catnip is best known for its effect on cats which is known as the "catnip response." Only members of the feline family respond to this euphoriant which is genetically determined although about one third of domestic cats do not react. Once a susceptible cat gets the scent, the animal goes into uncontrolled antics and rapture. An old cat is quickly transformed into a frisky kitten. The effect usually lasts fifteen minutes but may be prolonged for as long as an hour. The oil contains nepetalactone which was once used as a lure to trap the large members of the feline family. All species of cats react in this way, even lions, tigers, leopards, and lynxes, but not every individual reacts to it. The deciding factor is genetic. Fifty to sixty percent of adult cats show a reaction to catnip. This changes of behavior of the cats deserve a special caution for some rare occupations when people have to work close to these wild animals.
Note:
When spraying, keep the bottle vertical!
